Inglewood Unified School District 2018 Districting Maps

National Demographics Corporation (NDC) has developed 4 draft districting maps for the Inglewood Unified Board of Education. For each map a separate PDF packet is available below. The two-page packet consists of a map of the proposed trustee areas and a demographic profile of the trustee areas involved. For a more detailed review, all four maps are also posted to an interactive review website here at this link, where you can click the boxes to change between the various maps; click the box next to “Trustee Blocks” to see the Census Block (not the precise house or address) where each Trustee resides; and you can change the underlying map from a street map to a satellite map, a topographical map, or the “Open Streets” map that labels just about every government site, school, and business.

The four maps are designed to show three equally legitimate ways to draw the trustee area lines:

  • All maps are population balanced
  • All maps fully comply with the spirit of the California Voting Rights Act and the requirements of the Federal Voting Rights Act (all three heavily Latino neighborhoods in the District are each undivided in all maps, and Latinos are a majority of eligible voters [measured by Citizen Voting Age Population counts) in two trustee areas in all maps)
  • All maps have each trustee in a separate trustee area (no trustees are forced to run against one another)
  • All maps respect communities and follow major roads and other visible features whenever possible
  • Each trustee represents multiple Elementary School Attendance Zones in all maps
  • The Green Map attempts to unite each Elementary School Attendance Zone in a single trustee area, which results in a relatively compact map (the Middle School and High School Attendance Zones are generally too large to be united in a single trustee area)
  • The Orange Map shows an alternative approach to keeping Elementary Attendance Zones united in a trustee area to the extent possible
  • The Purple Map is significantly less compact because it ensures that every attendance zone is represented by at least two trustees
  • The Teal Map is an alternative version of the Orange map designed to address a concern that the original three maps all handle the southeastern part of the district in a very similar manner. The Teal map provides an alternative configuration from Kelso Elementary in the west to Crenshaw and Century Boulevards in the east. As a result of the alternative approach, Trustee Young-Faulk is in Area 4 and Trustee Ngaue-Tu’uholoaki is in Area 5. Area 1 is unchanged from the Orange Map, and Areas 2 and 3 are only slightly modified with small changes right around Kelso Elementary. (The changes made to Orange in this Teal map could also be made to Green and/or Purple, if that is requested.)

For all maps, each trustee area would be assigned the election year matching the end of the current term of the resident Trustee.

Districting Map Update 2.20.18

Below is a link to the “Olive” map PDF packet that includes a map and a demographic profile. The Olive map incorporates changes based on conversations with the Board members and the other feedback received so far. Also attached is a map showing and describing the changes made in the move from the Teal map to the Olive map. The Teal map lines are shown with red dashes overlaid on the color-shaded Olive map trustee areas, and the city council district lines are shown with green dashes. And the list of changes and their reasons are typed onto to the map as well.
